DIMENSION-6 is a family of peripheral devices for 3-D computer graphicsthat allows the manipulation of 3-D objects by the user with one hand inuninterrupted motion. The devices contend with six total degrees offreedom, that is, x, y, and z coordinates, as well as rotation on eachaxis. A seventh degree of freedom -- speed, is an added benefit of theDIMENSION-6, as the user is able to initiate realtime object manipulationin the performance range of 30 frames per second.The principal part of the control system is an optically workingforce/torque sensor integrated in a sphere approximating the size of astandard tennis ball. This sensor measures forces and torques applied tothe ball and sends corresponding data in digital format to the hostsystem through an RS-232 interface. A daisy-chain function makes itpossible to connect different types of input devices in one serial line.Other features include a built-in power supply, selectable baud rate to19.2, and several different software protocols.
